Near Palaceside Building in Takebashi, Tokyo, the small building of the Kanda Police Station Jinbocho police box in front of the Shueisha Building was demolished, and the box has reopened about ten meters back inside the same building. With paving stones laid before the set-back box, Hakusan-dori's sidewalk seems wider—a slightly different impression for regular passersby, with exchanges on Twitter and elsewhere.
The box covers Jimbocho, Kanda Nishikicho, Kanda Surugadai, Kanda Ogawamachi, Sarugakucho, and Hitotsubashi 2-chome—including the used-book district, publishers, printers, and sports shops—with officers on duty around the clock for local safety and community services such as directions.
According to Kanda Police Station, Hakusan-dori in front of the box is under an urban plan to widen the road; when the Shueisha Building was set back and completed in 1990, the box was scheduled to move inside. Space for the box was reserved in the building but used for traffic-related offices, and the two-story box in front remained as a temporary station for a long time. For the station, this is a move to "the originally planned location." The new box uses part of floors 1–3 at the building's north end, with more office space than before.
One might think the Hakusan-dori widening plan would start now that the sidewalk seems wider, but the Tokyo Metropolitan Government First Regional Construction Bureau, which oversees this area, says: "Whether widening begins is to be decided by fiscal 2015 (Heisei 27)—it is on a route where that decision will be made—but whether the plan actually moves forward is hard to say."
