Ninagawa = photo bottom = edited the "Old Edo Castle Photo Album" (1871). The map was pasted on the endpaper — inscribed Meiji 4, signed with his seal.

A museum pioneer — born 1835 Kyoto To-ji temple family, studied antiques independently, copied temple portraits — perhaps an enthusiast. Meiji bureaucrat at today's MEXT, helped found museums.

Museums grew gradually — 1873 Hibiya, 1875 Asakusa, consolidating at Ueno after the Boshin War. Tokyo Imperial Museum opened March 20, 1882 — though the 1872 Yushima exposition is also called birth of the museum.

Hard side: first director Machida Hisanari; soft side: Ninagawa's field surveys like Jinshin Inspection and reports. Resigned 1877 for illness, then published Kanko Zusetsu via Rakukosha until death at 47 in 1882 — cholera per Edward Morse.
