Before Dojima Avanza — Osaka's landmark and Palaceside Building's sibling — stands a stone monument: the entrance porch of the former Mainichi Newspapers Osaka HQ, preserved at readers' request when the building moved.

Avanza is 23 floors above, 2 below, 99.8 m — a plaza popular for rendezvous. The lit porch where reporter Hitomi Kinue once passed.

Japan's first female Olympic medalist — when women in track were controversial, she joined Mainichi Osaka sports in 1926, writing to promote women's sport while training. At Amsterdam 1928 she entered every individual event; missing the 100 m final, she took silver in the 800 m (2:17.2) behind Germany's Lina Radke — fame exceeding today's Nadeshiko stars.

She continued as athlete and reporter until pneumonia took her on August 25, 1931 — exactly three years after her silver.
