Looking up koban names, I noticed how many include a station: "XX Station Front Koban," "YY Station South Exit Koban," and the like. Tokyo Skytree (Sumida Ward) opens on the 22nd, and its nearest Tobu Line station, Narihirabashi, was renamed Tokyo Skytree Station in March, so I wondered whether we would see a "Tokyo Skytree Station Front Koban" (15 characters), Tokyo's longest koban name. But there is no koban in front of that station.
The closest koban to Skytree is Oshiage Station Front Koban, on the east side of the tower at Oshiage Station (Keisei, Toei Asakusa, and Tokyo Metro Hanzomon). With the land readjustment for the tower, it recently moved to a corner of the new station plaza (formally a "traffic plaza") beside the east edge of the Skytree site, in front of the commercial facility Solamachi. The cream-colored square two-story building at the lower right of the photo is it. To mark the tower's opening the station will add the subtitle "Oshiage Station (Skytree-mae)." It is a bit like calling Takebashi Station, for Palaceside Building, "Mainichi Shimbun-mae." The koban name, however, will stay "Oshiage Station Front," with no change planned. Minato Ward already has a Tokyo Tower Front Koban — wouldn't this be the moment to rename it Tokyo Skytree Front Koban?
If the locality is not using the name on a koban, there is probably no koban anywhere crowned with "Skytree." So I thought: there are Fujimi Koban under Itabashi (Itabashi Ward), Urayasu (Chiba), Higashi-Iruma (Fujimi City, Saitama)... and even Otsu (Shiga) and Kushiro (Hokkaido), all over Japan. Why shouldn't some police station name a koban with a view of the tower "Tokyo Skytree-mi Koban"?
Incidentally, a site has a corner called "Tokyo Skytree Visible from Here MAP" (http://www.1101.com/skytree/). Click the countless photo-spot marks on the map and you get a picture and a short comment. From as far as the summit of Mount Fuji more than 100 kilometers away, the mid-slope of Mount Haruna at 114 kilometers, and Mount Yamizo on the Ibaraki–Fukushima border at 140 kilometers, Skytree can be seen.
