After a night of typhoon-strength wind and rain, the 4th turned springlike. Cherry blossoms, five or six days behind normal, seem nearly all out. Somei-yoshino at Yasukuni Shrine—the standard tree for Tokyo's cherry blooming—behind the second torii beside the shinmon gate = photo = is perhaps five or six tenths open. Many stalls line the grounds; passing by, hanami mood is in full swing.

Yasukuni hanami is part of the "Chiyoda Sakura Festival" begun on the 30th; both the festival and peak viewing should climax this weekend, the 7th (Sat.) and 8th (Sun.). Both days a free shuttle bus runs Nihonbashi → Marunouchi/Otemachi → Jimbocho/Kanda → Kudanshita → Takebashi → Jimbocho/Kanda → Akihabara → Nihonbashi. A stop "Takebashi Mainichi Newspapers Front" opens behind the taxi stand at Palaceside Building's main entrance, with buses arriving about every 15 minutes.

Palaceside Building is normally closed Sundays but opens specially on the 8th. Many shops in the basement-first-floor and first-floor arcade—including restaurants and convenience stores—will operate. Forecasts call for fair weather; why not head to Takebashi?
