The town of Zermatt, Switzerland, base for Matterhorn climbs, bans buses and automobiles. A hub for skiing, mountaineering, and tourism, the Glacier Express station is the only external link. Bus tour visitors must transfer to rail one stop before town.
Within town, walking is basic. Otherwise, tourist horse carriages and electric cars—golf-cart-like vehicles move silently. Mainly they carry tourists' large suitcases. Travel agencies and hotels transport luggage by electric car while guests walk to hotels. Typically Swiss—they stubbornly uphold "principle" to preserve Zermatt's environment.
Japan too is shifting from gasoline to hybrid and electric vehicles. Palaceside Building was early to install fast chargers (B3 parking) and practice ECO. ECO may be a virtue we must embrace in the 21st century.
