A drop-off box for finished books and other unused items has been installed beside The Mainichi Newspapers reception counter on the west side of the first floor. The Foundation for the Prevention of Dementia (third floor), an affiliated organization of The Mainichi Newspapers, placed the box with the cooperation of Bookoff Corporation, a major used-book retailer that runs “Kimochi to.,” a service that turns unused goods into donations. Bookoff appraises the items and deposits the proceeds with the foundation.
One of the foundation’s main programs is “Dementia 110,” a free telephone counseling service for people troubled by dementia or caregiving (0120-65-4874; in principle Mondays and Thursdays, 10:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m.). Since opening in 1992 it has received nearly 35,000 calls, but securing operating funds has long been a challenge. The box is intended to expand donations that support the service.
“Kimochi to.” is a home-pickup buyback-and-donate service Bookoff launched in April 2019. Books, games, figures, brand goods, appliances, clothing, and other unused items can be appraised. The box is for people who wish to donate anonymously; because the foundation is registered as a candidate recipient of “Kimochi to.,” donations can also be made by arranging a home pickup.
