Morinaga & Company’s annual sale, timed to the Christmas season, opened on the 18th for two days in the free space beside the main entrance on the first floor. Assorted “Kyoro-chan Surprise Bags” at 1,200 yen and 600 yen were drawing crowds.
Chocolate favorites such as Hi-Chew, Angel Pie, and Koeda, along with various protein products, are lined up at bargain prices. The “Angel” mark that adorns these Morinaga goods marks its 120th anniversary this year.
According to Angel PLUS, the fan site run by Morinaga, founder Taichiro Morinaga took a cue from marshmallows—then the company’s top seller—being called “angel food” in the United States, and created a mark using an angel illustration. The angel emblem has changed seven times since, becoming a symbol of the company. Today, the site says, the angel mark appears on every product package.
