Five works by Seiren-kai, the calligraphy society led by Taisho Akahira—an honorary member of the Mainichi Calligraphy Exhibition and professor emeritus at Taisho University—are on view in the Mainichi Shodokai show window on the first floor of the Palaceside Building. They are a selection from the 39th Seiren-kai Calligraphy Exhibition, held in Ginza, Tokyo, this October, and will remain on display through late December.

Akahira was born in 1946 in Hirosaki, Aomori Prefecture. He studied under Sodo Nakamura, a leading calligrapher of modern Japan who helped found the Mainichi Calligraphy Exhibition. At the 71st Mainichi Calligraphy Exhibition in 2019 he won the top honor, the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Award.

On display are two works by Akahira, including “Joraku Gajo”; “Udo Shin Jin Myo I Kokuho” by Tairei Okuyama, head priest of Chusonji and a jury member of the Mainichi Calligraphy Exhibition; “Kaizen” by Taiyu Nemoto, also a jury member; and “Iro Doki” by Renkei Suzuki, likewise a jury member—five pieces in all.
