An avant-garde calligraphy exhibition by the Calligraphic Art Academy (a public-interest incorporated foundation; Yoko Shitaya, chair) opened on the 7th at Art Salon Mainichi on the first floor of the Palaceside Building. It runs through the 12th of this month. Admission is free.
Twenty-two works by 22 artists, including academy officers, are on view. All are bold and unrestrained, their ink charged with a force that overwhelms the viewer.
Asked “What is avant-garde calligraphy?” one exhibitor answered: “Expressing the impressions of a given moment on paper through sensation and technique.”
