A solo exhibition by Daizo Kaneko, one of the Mainichi Shodokai's standard-bearers for the next generation, is running through the 26th of this month at Art Salon Mainichi, the gallery on the first floor of the Palaceside Building. Titled “The 6th Daizo Kaneko Calligraphy Exhibition: One Hundred Rinsho Studies,” it has drawn crowds of calligraphy fans day after day.
Born in 1973, Kaneko is the grandson of Otei Kaneko, a recipient of the Order of Culture and one of the founding figures of the Mainichi Shodokai, and studied under his father, Takuyoshi Kaneko, a winner of the Mainichi Art Award. A calligrapher of proven ability, he became the youngest artist ever to win the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Award, the top honor, at last year's 75th Mainichi Shodo Exhibition.
Rinsho is the practice of copying classical masterpieces of superb brushwork as models, and the sight of 101 such works lining the gallery is nothing short of spectacular. Two additional pieces, including his award-winning work for the Minister of Education award, are also on display in the show window in front of the Mainichi Shodokai office on the same first floor.
