With the atmosphere remaining unstable, central Tokyo topped 31 degrees before noon on the 29th and looks set to record the hottest afternoon of the year. At the Palaceside Building the misting system on the large canopy (nicknamed the Umbrella) at the west entrance is running at full power, and a fog-like "water curtain" gives passersby a sense of cool.
The system, which sprays water to lower the surrounding temperature, was installed in 2020 by The Mainichi Newspapers with a Chiyoda City heat-island-mitigation grant. Twenty-eight nozzles on the inside and outside of the Umbrella send out a vigorous mist. It is scheduled to operate on weekday daytime hours until summer continues, when weather, temperature and wind speed meet set conditions.
According to the forecast for the 29th, many places in Kanto will exceed 30 degrees, and inland areas may see extreme-heat days of 35 degrees or more, so caution against heatstroke is being urged.
