We introduce an event organized by The Mainichi Newspapers: the special exhibition marking five years since the accession and 30 years since the marriage, "Together With a New Era — The Path of Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress" (special cooperation: the Board of Chamberlains, Imperial Household Agency), now on at Takashimaya in Nihonbashi, Tokyo. About 100 objects and some 150 precious photographs trace the steps of Their Majesties, Princess Aiko and the Imperial family. The exhibition runs through June 6.
The eighth-floor venue displays garments and other related items from the wedding and accession, but the open car on view in the front hall of Takashimaya's main building first floor especially catches the eye. It is a Rolls-Royce used in the couple's wedding parade on June 9, 1993; the procession stretched 170 meters. Two white motorcycles led, followed by a lead car, sidecar and security vehicles and the Grand Chamberlain's car; four sidecars and a file of ten motorcycles flanked Their Majesties' car.
The exhibition has five chapters: 1, Their Majesties' births — from childhood to their meeting; 2, the wedding — their path as Crown Prince and Crown Princess; 3, exchanges with other countries — international ties the two learned abroad; 4, a new era — the start of Reiwa; 5, standing close — their feelings for the people. Admission is free.
