The 24th Bokukoku-kai Exhibition (supported by The Mainichi Newspapers, the Mainichi Calligraphy Association and others), gathering works in which characters are carved aesthetically into wooden boards and other surfaces, is on at Art Salon Mainichi on the first floor of the Palaceside Building. It runs through the 29th. Admission is free.

Bokukoku-kai (chair Unso Sagawa) is based in Funabashi, Chiba Prefecture, with about 40 members. Since the first show in November 1997 it has held an annual group exhibition at Art Salon Mainichi; this is the first in three years because of the pandemic.

Thirty-eight free works are on view, plus 27 pieces on the study theme "Taking on the pictograph 'tsubo' (jar)." Using chisels and carving knives, the artists cut letters in three dimensions and finish them in vivid color with gold leaf and other materials, opening a world of carved-character beauty.
