On the monitor beside the Mainichi reception on the first floor of the Palaceside Building's west side, actress Non appears with an unguarded smile. It is the new 30-second commercial The Mainichi Newspapers began airing this month, plus a two-minute making-of. In the spot Non forcefully presents the paper's stance of shining a light on the socially vulnerable and reporting with persistence. Please take a look.

Marking its 150th year, the Mainichi set out a vision toward 2030: "A communicator company that looks closely at the individual, tells the world and connects society." It is a resolve to illuminate overlooked social issues and, by telling them, help realize a society in which anyone can live as themselves.

According to the newspaper, Non was chosen because of her acclaimed, sensitive acting and her active social-contribution work. The commercial now on air, "Non and the Mainichi: Theater Stage," shows her on a theater stage, letting emotion overflow in time with the music and sending a strong message to society. Another version is planned for autumn.

Alongside the spots, The Mainichi Newspapers has opened a special site, "Non and the Mainichi." Following the commercial's world, reporters from the campaign "Living in Japan," which follows the problem of children of foreign nationality whose school enrollment is unknown; reporters documenting young carers; and a blind reporter from the Braille Mainichi editorial desk, a bridge between visually impaired people and society, each talk with Non about their reporting themes.
