Central Tokyo on the 25th baked under a strong sun and topped 35°C before noon, the first extremely hot day of the year. An extremely hot day in June is the first in fully 11 years, and is said to be the earliest on record. At the Palaceside Building, the mist generators installed on the large canopy over the west entrance (known as the Umbrella) were switched on from the 24th.
The mist system, which sprays water to lower the surrounding temperature, was installed by The Mainichi Newspapers with a Chiyoda Ward grant for heat-island measures. There are 28 spray nozzles in all, on the inside and outside of the Umbrella. Please step into the cool-looking mist and enjoy the relief.
