A special lecture introducing the charm and history of the Palaceside Building as it marks its 55th anniversary, “The Palaceside Building: History and Today” (hosted by the Mainichi Cultural Center), will be held on Monday, March 21, a national holiday, at Mainichi Hall on the basement first floor. People involved in the architecture will speak about the Palaceside Building, known as a landmark work and selected among “20 Modernist Buildings.” Anyone interested is warmly invited.

Nihon Sekkei handled design and supervision, led by chief architect Shoji Hayashi. In the lecture, Yoshiaki Ogura, a Nihon Sekkei alumnus who drafted under Hayashi, will speak for 25 minutes on “The History of the Palaceside Building,” and Tetsuo Tsuchiya of the firm, who designed the renovation of the Nihon Sekkei office on the eighth floor, will speak for 25 minutes on “The Palaceside Building Today.” Architecture journalist Tatsuo Iso will then moderate a 45-minute talk between Ogura and Tsuchiya, “What Changes, What Does Not.”

The lecture runs from 1:30 p.m. to 3:20 p.m. on March 21. Fees are 3,500 yen (tax included) in person and 2,500 yen (tax included) online. Capacity is 40 in person and 200 online (first come, first served). In-person numbers may change with the COVID-19 situation. Apply to the Mainichi Cultural Center (☎ 03-3213-4768).
