An exhibition of masterpieces by East and West—Courbet, Renoir, Ryuzaburo Umehara, and others—titled “Resonance of Modern Japanese and French Painting” opened on the 1st at the Marubeni Gallery on the third floor of the Marubeni Building, next door to the Palaceside Building. Marubeni’s headquarters building opened in May this year; this show is the gallery’s opening exhibition and runs through January 31 next year.
According to Marubeni, the gallery’s concept is “a space where beauty from all times and places resonates.” It will present, in succession, the company’s collections of textiles, textile designs, and paintings. This first of four opening exhibitions features the painting collection.
On view are some 50 works: landscapes by Corot and other 19th-century realists; modern French masters such as Redon, Dufy, and Vlaminck; and artists they influenced, including Takeji Fujishima, Saburosuke Okada, Sotaro Yasui, and Ryohei Koiso. Admission is 500 yen for adults (university students and older).
