Looking toward the Imperial Palace from the Palaceside Building roof, the fresh green shines almost dazzlingly. It is a refreshing season. Golden Week is near. We want to travel. We want to tour museums. We want to go out for something delicious. We want to visit people we have not seen in a while. But with a third state of emergency in force, none of that looks easy to fulfill.

In fact I had wanted to use a holiday to see “Suspicious Pictures” (hosted by The Mainichi Newspapers and others), now on at the nearby National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo—but the museum is closed temporarily through May 11. A pity. The East Gardens of the Imperial Palace, which seem to appear in this blog more than almost any other place, have also been closed for a long stretch.

So it is “stay home and endure,” as the governor asks? I will at least try to read a lot and walk around the neighborhood.
