The Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics have given up on spectators from overseas, but preparations for holding the Games continue. At Mainichi Hall on the basement first floor of the Palaceside Building today, the building’s volunteer fire brigade trained on the assumption of an earthquake and fire during a related event.

Mainichi Hall is scheduled to host a Chiyoda Ward sports-viewing event: a public viewing of live broadcasts, focused on events expected to yield gold medals. The Mainichi Newspapers is also cooperating.

Fifteen people from Chiyoda Ward, The Mainichi Newspapers, and others took part, starting with protecting themselves from violent shaking. After the tremor subsided they practiced calling 119, contacting the disaster-prevention center, and treating and carrying an injured person using a dummy. The volunteer fire brigade also carried out initial firefighting against a fire that broke out at the same time, and guided spectators out of the building through emergency exits.

Kojimachi Fire Station staff called it “excellent training,” but we will stay alert and keep preparing for the unexpected.
