Acceptance of 2016 tax returns begins on Thursday the 16th. Ahead of that, the usual free tax consultation hosted by the Kojimachi Corporate Association and the Tokyo Certified Public Tax Accountants’ Association Kojimachi Branch is on through Wednesday the 15th in the “open space” beside Palaceside Building’s first-floor main entrance. From 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., eight tax accountants from the Kojimachi Branch each day — 24 over three days — take turns advising on tax matters centered on returns. They will also show you how to fill in the forms, and give hands-on guidance on e-Tax filing by computer.

If you had high medical costs, took out a housing loan, or donated to a volunteer group — people who get some tax back if they file — why not consult. Even if you are not a high earner, anyone who had income from two or more sources in 2015, side income of 200,000 yen or more such as manuscript or speaking fees, or a retirement payment that was not withheld must file.

The My Number system that started last year applies from this filing. Concretely, you must enter My Numbers (including dependents) on the return. Then, if you file by e-Tax no confirmation documents are needed, but paper filers need, ① a document that confirms the My Number and ② presentation or a copy of an identity document (dependents also need ①).

People who have a My Number card need only present it or attach a copy. Others need, as ①, a copy of the My Number notification card sent in 2015 or a resident-record extract showing the number (within six months of issue), and as ② a copy of one of: driver’s license, passport, public health-insurance card, physical disability certificate, etc.

For other unclear or worrying points, please ask at the tax consultation.

This year’s return acceptance runs through Wednesday, March 15.
