This year’s “advanced lifesaving course” for Palaceside Building tenants and others was held on the 26th at Mainichi Hall on the first basement. Aimed at placing “at least one advanced-course completer per workplace” so sudden illness or injury can be met at once, it is held every year; this day 21 firms and 30 people took part, including office and shop people and partner-company members for building security.

The course began at 9:00 a.m. with instructors from the Tokyo Disaster Prevention and Emergency Association. Eight hours until 5:00 p.m., with a lunch break — a dense program. After the talk, straight to practice. Facing a half-body dummy they repeated chest compressions (photo above) and artificial respiration (photo below) — quite a physical contest. Even in the air-conditioned hall, participants worked soaked in sweat.

Lifesaving courses are a public qualification taught and certified by municipal fire bureaus and headquarters such as the Tokyo Fire Department. There is a half-day “ordinary” and a full-day “advanced”; this building holds the advanced. A main feature is learning resuscitation not only for adults but for children, infants and newborns. Adult revival of stopped heart and lungs is “chest compression”: the heel of the hand on the center of the chest, both hands stacked, body weight, pressing so the ribs sink 5 centimeters. Doing that to a small child would crush them, so “children” under 16 are pressed with one palm on the lower half of the sternum, “infants” under 1 with two fingers a little below the chest center — the advanced course needs this “switching.”

They also learned AED operation, first aid (burns, fracture fixation, triangular-bandage wrapping and more), foreign-body removal and carrying methods.

After the full course, Fire Department–certified “advanced lifesaving skill certificates” were issued.
